Marek was born in Prague in 1908 and focussed on alchemy at Durmstrang. Intrigued by the way Muggles were not only managing to produce results only possible with a philosopher's stone, but also inventing new elements, he decided to attend Muggle university, specialising in nuclear chemistry. His research was cut short after the German invasion of Czechoslovakia, when he joined the Czech resistance until May 1942, when the Nazi retaliation - both Muggle and magickal - for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich made it impossible for even a wizard to hide.
